Waste and recycling collections

Providing environmental, social and economic sustainability to those communities we serve, Kier Street Services has a proven track record in increasing recycling. Notable successes include taking recycling in Corby Borough Council from 3.7% to over 40% and delivering the highest recycling rate in London in the London Borough of Bexley.

Increasing the scope and volume of materials recycled to include food, garden plastics, glass and plastic, we maximise recycling while minimising waste. Our approach focuses on providing high quality, reliable and timely services utilising methodologies that encourage participation by reflecting the needs of the built/rural and social environment.

Minimising environmental impact including reductions in emissions, Kier worked with its supply chain to pioneer cost effective and environmentally sustainable single pass collection methodology.

Across all services we aim to increase recycling, not just within waste collection but within grounds maintenance and street cleansing services where leaves, sweeping arisings, and green waste is diverted for re-use or composting. All our street litter barrows contain duel comportments to segregate arsings at source and we encourage the use of on-street recycling litter bins.

Trade waste and recycling

New legislation, cost, efficiency and an ever increasing awareness of environmental issues are compelling more and more businesses to recognise the benefits of recycling their commercial waste. We offer a comprehensive range of solutions, including waste and recycling collections, waste audits, promotional activities, incentives and advice on legislative requirements to help companies comply with WEEE, target recycling, reduce their carbon footprint, and save money.

We retain a dedicated commercial waste team who have the knowledge, skills and understanding to help private clients improve their management of waste. All have attained the CIWM Waste Awareness certificate which is specifically designed for employees who have responsibilities for dealing with organisations that produce waste.

Construction waste management

On construction sites Kier Street Services assist in producing site waste management plans and providing the necessary plant, equipment and material for the effective and efficient segregation of materials. These materials are then bulked by Kier Street Services and delivered for onward processing.

Our Commercial Construction and Demolition Waste Services have been developed in cooperation with the Building Research Establishment (BRE), delivering a bespoke version of its online SMARTWaste tool. This allows us to identify waste streams, forecast the quantity of waste arising and evaluate options to reduce, reuse or recycle the waste.

Skip hire, bulking and haulage

Providing effective and efficient solutions to the commercial and industrial sectors, Kier provide skip hire and bulking and haulage services to a range of clients. With operational hubs spanning the length and breadth of the UK, these services can be delivered as a just-in-time solution or over agreed contractual periods.

Waste processing and material markets

Facilities are designed with purity of the output material at the forefront of the agenda. By ensuring the output materials are of high quality, long term contracts can be secured with final re-processors. This is particularly important in the recycling industry as the price of materials fluctuates on a week by week basis in some cases.

Establishing markets and prices ensures security and sustainable and optimal prices, passed onto clients through a rebate system. This is particularly important in the ever changing material markets, reducing risk.

Purity of the output materials is perhaps one of the most important factors we identify. Substantial weighting is given to the purity aspect as without it facilities can not demonstrate sustainability in an ever changing market of recyclables.

Winter maintenance and gulley cleansing

Keeping the country open for business during severe weather, Kier Street Services carry out vital planned and reactive winter maintenance throughout the country. Responsibilities include the gritting of highways, country lanes and main trunk roads with flexible and manoeuvrable quad bikes salting footways, transport and shopping hubs amenities such as car parks.

Street cleansing

Bringing both the savings associated with mechanisation and the benefits of customer interaction through the deployment of the traditional 'sweeper with a barrow' manual operative, we utilise effective mechanical sweeping equipment with more traditional sweeping methods.

Consistently high standards demonstrated through key performance indicators are maintained through long-term strategic planning incorporating local conditions and behavioural patterns. For example regular deep cleansing operations in areas affected by heavy parking have addressed significant difficulties in cleaning congested streets. Reductions in litter found at identified 'hot spots' is achieved by a rerouting of operative's beats and utilising performance monitoring technology, building up a complete service profile of the operational area.

Timely response to fly-tipping, road traffic incidents and other emergencies is provided by designated Rapid Response crews operating under both instruction and their own initiative.
